The 5 Best Netflix Shows To Binge This Winter
Netflix is the number one streaming platform and despite its vast competition - ranging from Disney+ to Amazon Prime, there is no other streaming platform producing as many original shows each year. Netflix has had a whole array of internet sensations from Stranger Things to Outer Banks, however, a lot of their TV shows come and go making it hard to know what shows are worth sticking around for. This list breaks down the top 5 best Netflix shows for you to binge this winter that are actually worth watching.
5. Stranger Things
At number 5, we start off with Stranger Things in order to get this very obvious suggestion out of the way. You have probably heard about this show countless times - after all, it is Netflix’s top show - but it really is a show that lives up to its hype and is worth watching. The great thing about this show is that it is suitable for ANY age group and has the right mix of character depth (for the drama fans) and sci-fi for the nerds.
4. The Good Place
The Good Place is one of the best sitcoms made which follows an unusual format for a sitcom with an overarching plot throughout every season which lends itself much better to the ‘binge-style’ watching we have all became accustomed to. This show only has four seasons and that was a choice by the writers as they wanted to go out on a high. The show follows four humans in the after life - in ‘The Good Place’ to be more precise - with the main character, Eleanor (played by Kirsten Bell), striving to fit in with the other humans after realising she had been put there by mistake. The show expertly explores philosophical issues while also managing to have the perfect combination of drama and humour. If you’re looking for a show with a strong beginning, middle and ending that will keep you engaged all throughout then this show is perfect for your next binge.
3. Gilmore Girls
The 2000s network drama ‘Gilmore Girls’ make for the perfect autumn or wintertime binge for all ages (and genders!). The show was popular during its original run in 2000-2007 and has recently reached new heights thanks to TikTok, cultivating a larger audience than ever. This show is the ultimate comfort watch, which packs a lot of drama while also feeling very relaxed and homey at the same time. The premise of the show is a single mother, Lorelai, and her daughter, Rory, who she had as a teen. The show’s main conflict revolves around Lorelai’s rocky relationship with her parents who struggle to not think about all that she could of done if she had not had Rory as a teen and fail to recognise all that she has achieved since then on her own.
2. Derry Girls
This is one of the best Netflix shows for not only teens, but anyone really, and makes for a particularly great watch for those in the UK who will understand a lot more of the show’s references. The sitcom follows 5 friends - 4 Northern Irish girls and 1 English boy - as well as their families during the 90s in the midst of a national conflict. This is truly without a doubt one of the funniest shows you will watch and takes you to lots of places you don’t expect - including a Bill Clinton rally based on the president’s visit during the conflict.
1. LOST
This is funnily enough another 2000s network show which has found a new audience recently (there are a lot of 2000s shows gaining popularity again at the moment), and was a major hit when it first aired but had dwindled in popularity following what many viewers at time called a ‘disappointing’ series finale in 2010. That has now changed after the show was put back on Netflix and audiences can now watch the complicated - yet extremely well written - show all at once so that they have a full understanding of what’s going on in the show, something that many network viewers struggled to do in its original run and were therefore sometimes confused. No other show (in my opinion) has the character depth of this show and the semi sci-fi drama is a must watch for this alone. LOST has an incredible plot that succeeds in providing plot twist after plot twist without becoming tired, however, the thing that is bound to keep you watching is the strong characters with a level of depth that no other show I’ve watch has been able to capture.
Final Thoughts
Netflix has so many great shows to watch and this list is just the start of the many must-see shows on the streaming platform. I aimed to keep this list of all the best Netflix shows to watch this winter to just TV shows that I think ANYONE could enjoy, so if you think I’ve missed any that people might enjoy, then feel free to leave your suggestions in the comments below. Thanks for reading! :)
