The Top 5 Most Annoying Deaths In The Series LOST
LOST (2004-2010) was known for its ability to provide almost weekly plot-twists and dramatic season finales, which is part of the reason why the show was able to cultivate such a large following during its run. However, these plot twists and dramatic season finales also resulted in the deaths of many characters and over the six seasons, there were several annoying deaths which many fans are still not over. This list will break down the top 5 most annoying deaths in the show from least to most, however, as there are over 30 dramatic deaths (at least) over the course of the show, you can expect all 5 on this list to be pretty annoying.
5. Libby
Libby was first introduced in Season 2 as one of the survivors from the tail end of the plane. She was the only one of the main characters from the tail end to not receive a character-centric episode with their own flashbacks, however, Libby herself appeared in both Hurley & Desmond’s flashbacks. At the time of Libby’s death, the character still felt like somewhat of an enigma with Hurley struggling to remember where he knew her from before the island and the audience seeing that she was in fact also in the mental hospital. When Libby was shockingly killed before this mystery had been resolved, it felt particularly annoying for the audience that this mystery would not have a resolution. The audience was also left heartbroken for Hurley who had been waiting on Libby returning with blankets for their first date.
4. Helen
John Locke’s flashbacks have very little joyous moments with John constantly being done wrong by people he puts his trust in, particularly his father Anderson Cooper, who not only stole his kidney but also pushed him out of the eight floor of a building which ultimately is what paralysed John Locke and is the reason he was in a wheelchair before the plane crash. However, Helen was a bright spot in John Locke’s bleak past with her constantly trying to help him move past the betrayal of his father. When John Locke returns to the ‘real world’ in Season 5, viewers are disappointed to learn that Helen has died. Helen was a particularly endearing character who viewers would have liked to have seen more of now that opportunity presented itself in season 5.
3. Charlotte
Charlotte was one of the members of the ‘rescue team’ that dropped on to the island at the start of Season 4. The character did not contribute a lot over the season, however, the mystery of what her true intentions were was not clear and the character was noticeably hiding something from everyone on the island - including the fellow members of her ‘rescue team’. When the character finally reveals that she had grown up on the island and had been looking for a way back to the island for years as she bled out, the audience was left dissatisfied at the futility of the revelation now that her character was dead. This explanation would lend well though to the Oceanic 6’s desire to return to the island after leaving.
2. John Locke
John Locke was a favourite character for many so it came as a great disappointment to many that the season 4 finale’s reveal of John Locke in the coffin really was John Locke. The audience was hopeful that the John Locke on the island meant that the character had somehow been miraculously rewarded for his efforts in protecting the island and were disappointed to learn that it was instead the smoke monster. John Locke’s death felt very dissatisfactory to the character’s arc as it felt like his character should have been involved more in the endgame of the show and the reveal of his final thought being ‘I don’t understand’ being the final blow in an already pretty upsetting death.
1. Charlie
Many fans may disagree about this death being annoying, as it was revealed many episodes before that the character would soon be facing his demise. However, many fans had been hoping for some miracle twist which would allow the character to survive so were annoyed when he did ultimately die. The character’s death is a bittersweet moment in the show which is undoubtedly one of the most iconic moments in the show (NOT PENNY’S BOAT), however, the character was missed in the later seasons where it felt like his light-hearted and humorous presence would have provided some much needed refreshing moments in the heaviness of the last few seasons. The rest of the characters forgetting or seemingly not caring for very long about the character’s death also annoyed audiences, with Claire upset but not heartbroken and many of the characters choosing to ignore his warning he wrote on his hand.
Honourable Mentions & Final Thoughts
As LOST had so many character deaths, it is likely that this list has missed some deaths which you found particularly annoying. Some honourable mentions which didn’t quite reach this list include Rousseau, her daughter, Shannon, Michael and Juliette (who we all wanted to see reunite with her sister).
